9 COMMON CAUSES OF ANOVULATION

Anovulation is the condition in a woman that disrupts menstrual cycles which can lead to infertility because there is a lack of egg or high quality egg for fertilization of the sperm.

This is the same thing for women that have completed menopause. For them, it is quite normal but abysmally abnormal for a woman who is still menstruating.

It could be a chronic problem but sometimes a woman may have one cycle of anovulation and then go back to a normal cycle.

This condition can be caused by medication and other external factors that affect hormone levels.

The basic symptom of anovulation includes;

  • An increased amount of mucus in the cervix.
  • A rise in temperature in the middle of the menstrual cycle.
  • May experience regular menstrual periods.

Having said this, let’s discuss the possible causes of anovulation:

  1. CONTRACEPTIVES CAN CAUSE HORMONAL IMBALANCE

Birth control pills works in certain kinds of ways. There are many that alters the female hormones thereby blocking ovulation from taking place. These drugs, whether birth control pill, birth control patch, vaginal ring, birth control implant and birth control slot, interfere with the ovaries ability to grow and release eggs. This action will result in the woman having anovulation. Each method of birth control blocks ovulation in a different way, and can lead to serious bleeding.

  1. COMMON DRUGS THAT CAN CAUSE ANOVULATION:

Drugs like Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS) which include many pain relievers such as Ibuprofen, Naproxen and many others has been suggested by many studies to cause anovulation if taken beyond 10 days.

Fertility expert, Dr. Masood Khatamee, MD, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at New York University said that couples who are trying to get pregnant should beware of all herbal supplements and must talk to their doctors about them. Patients need to be aware that herbal supplements are medicine and can impact negatively on their treatment.

  1. SKIN CREAMS

Did you know that common skin cream may inhibit ovulation? Many over-the-counter creams has been documented to contain estrogen or progesterone that are designed to fight aging. These products when absorbed into the body can cause anovulation or hormone imbalance.

  1. STEROIDS

Steroids are generally used to reduce inflammation but they have been found to interfere with the hormones needed for ovulation.

Most common types of this kind of steroids include Cortisone and Prednisone. These are usually prescribed for common allergies, Asthma and allergic reactions but one study found out it can cause anovulation in women.

Annals of the Rheumatic disease, an international peer review journal, found that half of the women who received a short of steroid experienced an irregular cycle afterward.

  1. DRUGS FOR EPILEPSY:

Are you suffering from epilepsy? It is documented that the medications may interfere with menstrual cycle and ovulation. This was documented by the journal of Human Reproductive Sciences.

  1. CANCER DRUGS:

Many cancer drugs, radiation and chemotherapy can cause permanent problem to the ovaries. It is very important these drugs are discussed with the doctor if you are trying to conceive.

  1. PREMATURE MENOPAUSE:

Also known as premature ovarian insufficiency, premature menopause may also cause anovulation. It is common to diagnose this in a woman who stops ovulating before the age of forty (40). The cause of this condition is unknown but it can be treated with medications to stimulate ovulation and achieve pregnancy.

  1. STRESS:

Women who exercise excessively or experience a high level of stress may experience anovulation because of disrupted hormone levels.

  1. WEIGHT PROBLEMS:

Weight gain or loss may also be closely related to anovulation. This is because the hormones estrogen depends upon a healthy body weight.

A study found out that women who are found to be overweight or underweight have decreased estrogen levels.

Treatment for anovulation

In treating anovulation, the doctor will test the woman’s hormone level or carry out an ultra-sound scan to view the ovaries.

If these cycles are related to an outside influence like nutrition or lifestyle, effective treatments will include regulating eating habits and moderating physical activities. Making changes to your weight (gaining or losing weight as directed by your doctor) may also be enough to restart stalled ovulation.

If it is the case of hormonal imbalances,  your doctor may prescribe medications for fertility.

These medications are designed to combat the cause of a woman’s infertility. There are drugs designed to ripen the follicles, increase estrogen, and help the ovaries release an egg.

Surgery is an option in the event that a serious complication, such as a tumor, is diagnosed.
